(formerly 114 Oral Communication 2)
ESL 960LS continues from ESL 950LS to develop students' oral communication skills in
a variety of social, business,
and/or academic situations. As students, you will learn to hear and understand idioms and expressions
commonly used in spoken English,
and use them appropriately; sharpen your ability to understand the conversation of native English speakers,
using verbal and nonverbal cues;
develop fluent and appropriate use
of conversational strategies and interaction skills to exchange ideas in small and large group
communication; develop verbal and
nonverbal interaction skills appropriate to the above; converse and discuss with native speakers and
foreign-born speakers of English,
using the communication strategies learned; gain a better understanding of the culture of the
English-speaking world.
Four video samples of final speeches are given, representing
grades A, B, C, and D.
The speech segment of the final exam was valued at 75
points; the interactive segment (active listening and asking follow-up
questions of peer speakers) was valued at 25 points.
After studying and discussing the theme of philanthropy in a
series of class assignments, students prepared an oral presentation related to
this theme. For example, they could compare charity in the USA with charity in
their country, tell about the philanthropic pursuits of a particular person,
visit a volunteer organization and describe its activities, or tell what they
would do if they had $20 million dollars to give away.
Students' speech were evaluated holistically on content,
organization, preparation, language use, fluency, comprehensibility, and verbal
and nonverbal delivery, and ability to engage the audience in the topic.

that the sound quality is not optimal, as the students were not wearing lapel
microphones when they delivered their speeches.
