Assessment of student recordings

Intermediate ESL students studied with Marsha Chan using Phrase by Phrase Pronunciation and Listening in American English textbook and audio CDs. Students had access to the Phrase by Phrase videotapes in the Mission College Library and the Learning Assistance and Tutorial Center. In addition, they had access to small digital video clips of the Phrase by Phrase videos the instructor's course website. After learning and practicing the material in class, students were directed to record several different items for each week's homework, listen to themselves, monitor their pronunciation and complete a written self-assessment. They recorded or presented these items in class. The following recordings were made in the ESL Lab on campus during class, and students had a limited amount of time to record.

The recordings were evaluated holistically using Marsha Chan's Pronunciation Scoring Guide.
