What's in our lab :-)

Download the PowerPoint presentation Genesis-ESL_lab_training.ppt to see our lab and get an overview of the instructor's view of Genesis.

The ESL Lab in room E2-401 enjoys near-full occupancy from about 7:45 AM to 9:30PM Monday - Thursday, some daytime hours Friday as well as 5:15-8:30PM, and Saturday mornings. Approximately 30 sections of ESL and IIS classes share the lab one or two times a week on a regular basis, and others use it on an occasional basis. English as a Second Language (ESL) and Institute for International Students (IIS) have first priority to schedule use of the lab. There are ongoing opportunities for demonstration and professional development.

Linguatronics

Click the above link to get to Genesis.. Download pdf files from their site: Genesis Flyer, Brief, Datasheet, Detailed Brochure, Installation Guide, User's Guide. Click Take an Interactive Tour or Watch a Flash Presentation.

Mike Akagi of Linguatronics first demonstrated Genesis to a small group in summer (IIS: Carol Qazi,, Kathy Moles. FL: Monica Rivas), later to a larger group Sept. 25, 2002 (ESL: Marsha Chan, Jody Hacker, Stephanie Kashima, Kara Dworak; Britta Burton; FL: Karyn Armstrong, Jackie Capurro; IT: Pat Hudak, Randy Wu), and finally to a group inluding faculty, administrators and purchasing personnel (Marsha Chan, Jody Hacker, Rachel Lowenberg, Dianne McKay, Worku Negash, Phil Pabich, Mina Jahan, Joe Samuels, Brigit Espinoza, Ann Matthiessen).

In December 2002, Mike Akagi presented an offer that Mission partner with Linguatronics to become a demo site in Silicon Valley. As we are all impressed with this software solution and the partnership offer, we decided to purchase Genesis and related products.

The hardware and software components were purchased in February 2003. Installation began in April 2003. Demonstrations and training began in May 2003. ESL and IIS began sharing the lab on a regular basis beginning in Fall semester 2003. The computers were replaced at the end of the semester to enhance funcionality.

Meeting Notes and Project Updates

Establishing the ESL Lab involved many people in many academic and non-academic departments; faculty, classified and administration; college, district, and off-campus personnel. Our first whole-hearted research and discussion began in 2001.Some of our meetings and decisions (2002-2003) were recorded and are available for viewing/download here.

Software Solutions

Solutions running on the Macintosh platform

I worked with Apple Educational rep Tim Lin and Apple engineers to identify products that run on Mac OS.Below were some possible Mac solutions. I contaced the companies for more information. Eventually we decided that we would not be able to run the software effectively on our existing Macintosh G3 computers. Later, those computers were transfered to other campus labs.

Divace Language Learning Solutions.

On November 6, 2001, Rich Kehoe of Americal demonstrated the Tandberg Prisma/DIVACE Multimedia Language Learning Center at Mission. I had previously attended such a presentation in May 2001 at West Valley College. (DIVACE=Digital Interactive Audio Video Recorder.) In June 2002, Rich Kehoe returned to present Elice, a non-computer language lab system.

He gaveus a quote on Tandberg Prisma/DIVACE Multimedia Language Learning Center and the Elice System. Check them out on the web.

Here's a lab built by Americal. I think it doesn't show the flat panel monitors that they put in their proposal for Mission. I like the acoustical study carrels better than desks with no acoustical walls (below).

CAN 8 VirtuaLab is an interactive, multimedia tool used extensively for the instruction of modern languages, English as a Second Language, as well as learning assistance and workplace training. Specified completely by teachers' requests, CAN-8 smoothly integrates student learning activities with instructor activities of evaluation and lesson creation.

Sony Language Learning Systems. In summer 2002, Kurt Carr came to Mission and presented the Sony system. I've asked him to return to present again. We have a quote from him and a proposal to be a showcase partner. If I can get it in digital format, I will create a pdf and a link to it here. We have a lot of literature on the products. Also, check their web site.

Is it flexible and easy to set up teacher, individual student and groups.
The Tandberg system met our major criteria for an audio/video distribution system.
We've developed software to control a student station.
