Marsha Chan has been on the full-time faculty at Mission College since January 1986. While teaching any and all of the courses in the ESL curriculum, (listening and speaking, grammar and writing, reading and vocabulary, and pronunciation), Marsha Chan delights in enhancing learning activities with current technology. This includes audio recording, video recording, interactive language lab, CDs, DVDs, email, voice mail, online chatting, online audio, video blogs, presentation and interactive multimedia software.

During her decades of teaching at Mission, Marsha Chan has taught on-campus, off-campus and online classes in the ESL and Computer Applications departments. She has given Professional Development workshops on such topics as Using Video for the Flipped Class, Using Audacity to Create Audio Podcasts, Advanced Quiz Creation in AngelLearning Online Content Management System, Evaluating the Intelligibility of Non-Native English Speakers, and Multimedia for You: Video Clips to Support Student Learning. She served on the college's Title 5 grant as curriculum writer, pilot teacher and trainer. She was involved in many initiatives of the Workplace Learning Resource Center. She has served on the the Distance Learning Committee, and is a former member of the Academic Senate, the Technology Committee, and various other District and College commitees. She is a past Faculty Advisor to the Chinese Students Association.

Her Spring 2009 sabbatical project resulted in the creation of 200 online quizzes that focus on the 2,000 most frequent words in the English language. Everyone is welcome to use them! Marsha Chan's Vocabulary Quizzes

Mission College ESL LabOne of her long-term projects was the procurement of a state-of-the-art interactive multimedia language laboratory installed in 2003 for the ESL Department. A recipient of an Innovation Grant, she spent several years on the language lab project, and she continues to provide leadership in the lab and offer technology mentoring to other faculty.

Marsha Chan's publications include College Oral Communication 1 (book and 4 CDs), Phrase by Phrase Pronunciation in American English book, 5 CDs and 5 DVDs, and English for Child Care: Language Skills for Parents and Providers (book and CD). She is a contributing author of Longman English Interactive, a multimedia learning series consisting of four instructional levels that each provide 100 hours of instruction.

As for professional presentations, she frequently speaks at conferences for educators. She has given 200 adjudicated and invited demonstrations, workshops, colloquiums and institutes – in person and online. Her recent presentations include Using YouTube to Engage Learners and Enhance Learning, Scaffolding Academic Listening and Speaking, Energizing Pronunciation Lessons, Tools for Designing Distance Learning Instruction, 10 Ways to Use Sound Files for Language Learning, and English Language Skills for Parents and Child Care Providers. She also accepts speaking engagements at schools, colleges and universities in California, in other states, and other countries such as China. Marsha NISODProf. Chan is the recipient of several excellence awards, including the 1988 Mission College President's Award, the 1994 and 1996 National Institute for Staff and Organizational (NISOD) Excellence Awards, the 1995 Mission College Faculty Recognition Award for Service to the College Excellence, and the 2002 Mission College Faculty Recognition Award for Publication and Presentation Excellence. She was also a nominee for the 2003 David R. Pierce Faculty Technology Award, the 2004 Mission College Excellence in Service to the College award, and the 2006 and 2010 Mission College Faculty Recognition Award for Publication and Presentation Excellence.

A graduate of Stanford University, Marsha Chan completed the requirements for Bachelor's degrees in both Art and French and the Master's degree in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education, specializing in bilingual and foreign language instruction. She earned elementary and secondary school credentials from San Jose State University before settling on community college teaching. She has taken course work in foreign languages, computer applications, web development, multimedia development, graphic art and graphic design at various institutions, including the University of California at Berkeley, Foothill College and Mission College. She has taught in Hong Kong, mainland China, and California.
