How Bryan Overcame the Fear of Public Speaking

by Marsha Chan

Do you ever wish that you could speak in front of a group confidently and gracefully? If someone needed a speaker for an event, most people would quickly point to a coworker, boss, or friend rather than volunteer themselves. If a commonly quoted statement has merit, the fear of public speaking ranks close to the fear of death. If you wonder what terrifies people about giving a speech, they may say itıs looking foolish in front of others. If you ask Bryan the most important skill he improved in school, he will indicate the art of public speaking. If his kindergarten class sang a song in a school performance, he always hid behind his classmates, closed his lips tightly, fidgeted uncomfortably, and wished that he could simply disappear from the stage. In third grade, unless the teacher specifically called on him, Bryan did not like responding to a question, even if he knew the answer. During a seventh grade speech, if he hadn't paused to calm down, reflect on his ideas, and visualize his audience as friendly listeners, he might have continued awkwardly, foolishly, and ineffectively. Unless Bryanıs seventh grade teacher had assigned frequent speeches and given students encouragement and instruction, he might not be the confident speaker he is today. If you wish you werenıt afraid of speaking, follow Bryan; prepare well in advance, practice aloud in front of a mirror, and relax just before beginning to speak.
