Bilingual Babies

Most babies in America grow up learning only English, and most American adults speak only English.  Nowadays, due to immigration and changing attitudes towards bilingualism, more infants are being raised bilingually than before. How do bilingual babies learn two languages? We donšt really know much about how bilingual babies acquire language. The reason is because most research on babies is conducted on monolingual infants. Bilingual and monolingual babies speak their first words around the same age, but bilinguals learn words somewhat differently from monolinguals, which is information from a 2007 study in child development. Babies in bilingual homes hear the sounds of two languages, unlike babies in monolingual homes. Bilingual babies apparently need a few more months to associate the sounds of each language to the objects that the sounds represent. Monolingual babies use consonant sounds to direct their language learning at the age of 17 months, but bilingual babies do so at 20 months. Scientists believe that this difference is advantageous for bilingual infants.
