Basic Sentence Patterns: Simple Sentences
Part B. Writing Simple Sentences with Basic Sentence Patterns

© Marsha Chan

You now know what a simple sentence is and isn't. (If not, review your lessons on basic and simple sentences.)

1. Create a Word document and save it as <Yourname>_BasicSent.doc, e.g., MaryJones_BasicSent.doc. Use the format below the horizontal bar on this page .

2. Choose a topic related to your job, career, or major.

3. Write a paragraph using 10 simple sentences (no compound or complex sentences) about your topic.

4. For each of the three sentence types, write 3 or 4 sentences of eight or more words about your chosen topic (total = 10).

5. Use a different verb in each sentence (minimum 10 different verb families). Note: eat, ate, eaten, eating, eats are in the same verb family.

6. Make sure all of the sentences are related to the same topic, as in the model paragraph, Swimming: the Yangs' Favorite Leisure Activity.

7. Write an appropriate title. Capitalize all of the important words (nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs).

8. Below the paragraph, copy the 10 sentences one by one and mark the sentence parts. Indicate the number of words in parentheses. Use the symbols [ ] _ _ < > ( ) to identify the following parts of each sentence

[subject]
_verb_
<complement>
<direct object>
(prepositional phrases)

9. Proofread and save your file often.

10. Send your file <Yourname>_BasicSent.doc to my Digital Drop Box (DDB) at cvc.blackboard.com by the due date (check the syllabus): Student Tools > Digital Drop Box > Send file.

11. Check your DDB later. Revise your work and post it on the Discussion Board (DB) if required(check the syllabus).
