Course Description

Advanced ESL speakers receive guidance and extensive practice in refining oral production and listening skills. Listening focuses on discrimination of sounds in English and on comprehension of connected spoken discourse. Oral production focuses on increasing control of the English sound system. The course emphasis is on overall pronunciation improvement so as to minimize miscommunication or misperception due to foreign accent.

Prerequisites: One of the following:

  • Successful completion of ESL 960G High-Intermediate Grammar, ESL 960LS, High-Intermediate Listening/Speaking and ESL 960RWHigh-Intermediate Reading/Writing at Mission College
  • The equivalent of the above coues at another accredited educational institution*
  • Completion of an AA/AS degree or higher at an English-medium institution*
    *Contact a Mission College counselor or the instructor as soon as possible for assistance clearing the course prerequisites. Note: Students MUST have a student ID number to be seen by a counselor.

Students taking the online section of ESL*970AM Accent Modification must have access to the Internet with a microphone and headphones or speakers.
