Analysis of Simple Sentences

A simple sentence is made up of a subject-main verb combination, either or both of which may have compound elements. Study these examples.

  1. [Tuyet] and [Phuong] used to live (in Vietnam), (in Southeast Asia). (Sentence Pattern I: S + VI)
  2. [Mario] was born (in Mexico), just south (of the US border). (Sentence Pattern III: S + passive V)

Analyze the simple sentences below by marking the sentences parts as indicated in the examples above.

Online English Homework

  1. For this online English class, the students must access the online syllabus on the web every day.
  2. The syllabus lists the assignments on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week.
  3. The homework must be done by 12:00 noon on the due date.
  4. Many assignments are from one of the textbooks.
  5. After completing the exercises in the textbook, the students check the answers on their own by using an answer key.
  6. Some of the answers are located in the back of the book.
  7. Other answers are found on a web page.
  8. Besides textbook exercises, web-based lessons are also assigned.
  9. Students may click on a link to read details about a particular lesson.
  10. Sometimes, a link from the course home page connects users to the QuizCenter to take a quiz.
  11. Each user enters the appropriate username and password before being allowed to take the quiz.
  12. The professor receives the quiz results almost immediately.
  13. Sentence writing can be sent in the body of an email message.
  14. However, original writing of paragraphs and essays has to be submitted to the professor by email for individual marking.
  15. Formatted essays are always sent in a word processing document as an email attachment.
