Analysis of Simple Sentences
A simple sentence is made up of a subject-main verb combination,
either or both of which may have compound elements. Study these
examples.
- [Tuyet] and [Phuong] used to live (in Vietnam), (in
Southeast Asia). (Sentence Pattern I: S
+ VI)
- [Mario] was born (in Mexico), just south (of the US
border). (Sentence Pattern III: S + passive
V)
- The [students] (in the online English class) have to demonstrate
<independence>, <self-discipline>, and <skill>
(in time management). (Sentence Pattern
II: S + VT + O)
These symbols [ ] ( ) < > are used to identify the following
parts of each sentence:
- [sss] = subject, which can be
a noun, pronoun, gerund or infinitive
- vvv = verb, which can
be transitive or intransitive
- (pppp) = prepositional phrase,
a preposition and its object and modifiers
- <ooo> = object, the direct
object of the verb
In addition, each sentence is identified as one of the following:
- Sentence Pattern I. Subject + Intransitive
Verb (including Subject + Linking Verb + Complement)
- Sentence Pattern II. Subject
+Transitive Verb + Object (n, pron, inf, ger)
- Sentence Pattern III. Subject +Passive Verb
- Basic Sentence Patterns
Analyze the simple sentences below by marking the sentences
parts as indicated in the examples above.
Online English Homework
- For this online English class, the students must access the
online syllabus on the web every day.
- The syllabus lists the assignments on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday of each week.
- The homework must be done by 12:00 noon on the due date.
- Many assignments are from one of the textbooks.
- After completing the exercises in the textbook, the students
check the answers on their own by using an answer key.
- Some of the answers are located in the back of the book.
- Other answers are found on a web page.
- Besides textbook exercises, web-based lessons are also assigned.
- Students may click on a link to read details about a particular
lesson.
- Sometimes, a link from the course home page connects users
to the QuizCenter to take a quiz.
- Each user enters the appropriate username and password before
being allowed to take the quiz.
- The professor receives the quiz results almost immediately.
- Sentence writing can be sent in the body of an email message.
- However, original writing of paragraphs and essays has to
be submitted to the professor by email for individual marking.
- Formatted essays are always sent in a word processing document
as an email attachment.
