Financial Aid

Do you need money for college? You may qualify for a fee waiver.

To qualify for a Board Of Governors' Fee Waiver (BOGW) waiver, a student only has to have $1 of need! A BOGW application is available in the front of the spring 2004 schedule of classes (page 5) and on our Mission College Financial Aid Website. http://www.missioncollege.org/student_services/financial_aid/default.html

Go to the Financial Aid Office to apply for a BOGW prior to registering for their spring classes. (You may apply after registering, but you may have to pay your own fees; then, you'll be reimbursed after school begins.)

If you qualify, your enrollment fees, health fee, and parking fee in excess of $20 a semester for the entire 2003-2004 academic year (summer '03, fall '03 and spring '04) will be waived.

Students must reapply each academic year. If you had a fee waiver anytime during this, the 2003-2004 academic year, it will expire at the end of the Spring 2004 semester.

Smokeout Week Events - "Cold Turkey Raffle!"

Next week marks the 27th annual Great American Smokeout Week. Please join our efforts to learn about the risks associated with tobacco use and how to kick the habit!

* Tuesday, November 18, 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the Cafeteria - "How to Become a Former Smoker: Tips to Quit!" - will be presented by speaker Dennis Acha, Project Director/Health Educator, American Lung Association.

* Thursday, November 20, 12 noon to 2:30 p.m., room W2 - 601 - "The Insider" movie, starring Al Pacino and Russell Crowe. This movie is based on true facts about the tobacco industry. Jeffrey Wigand (played by Crowe) is a central witness in the lawsuits filed by Mississippi and 40 other states against the tobacco industry which were eventually settled for $246 billion. Wigand, former head of research and development and a corporate officer at Brown and Williamson, was a top scientist, the ultimate insider. No one like him had ever gone public before.
Please tell your students about this film showing. Free popcorn and drinks will be provided.

* Smokers' Graveyard - located outside the Campus Center Quad, will be present 11/18 - 11/20 (weather-permitting). Each tombstone bears facts about the lethal dangers of smoking for ourselves and loved ones.

* "Cold Turkey Raffle" - raffle entries will be taken at each Smokeout activity (speaker and film). Winner will be notified by the Student Health Services and given a "cold turkey" - just in time for Thanksgiving!

* Facility/Safety Committee will be meeting (11/13) to discuss a revision of the current college Smoking Policy. Effective January, 2004, California Community Colleges will have to enforce more restrictive smoking policy. We will let you the outcome of these meetings. This major change should result in cleaner air for our college community.

* "Quit Tips" are available in the Student Health Services. "Quit Kits" will be available at the 11/18 presentation (Cafeteria). If you are interested in joining a Smoking Cessation group, leave send me an email. "Freedom from Smoking" sessions can be set-up on-campus.
